who needs sleep?

Posted Jan 27 2009 7:03pm

Getting to bed last night was no easy task.
Little man kept getting up with “issues”.
Need hug
Hug given with a quick read from a favorite story book.
Mama, diaper.
Poopy diaper changed. I’m glad he is regular, but really now, it’s late.
Need hug.
Quick hug given.
Water peeze.
Okay, he did say please. So a little glass of water, another quick hug followed by a sleepy, whispered,
I lub you, ni-ni.
Aaaah! Bliss. In my own bed, next to darling, sleeping, loudly snoring husband. Maybe I can catch up on my deprived sleep bank since I only ,managed a 3 hour nap after working 7 pm to 7 am the previous night. Just as I start to drift off….
Mo-ooommmm…..it hurts so baa-aaad. I can’t take it anymore.
Holly has been dealing with what we first thought was “female issues” since Monday. The doctor on Wednesday gave her antibiotics saying it was probably a UTI. Early Thursday morning, while I was still at work and unable to leave, Holly called me in tears telling me she couldn’t find the heating pad, the pain was excruciating, she had thrown up and she was certain her appendix had burst. This all came out in a long, teary sentence over the phone. As we talked she calmed down somewhat so I made the call that she would be okay at least for the two hours before I got home. I did assure her that if her appendix had burst odds are she would not be in pain as that often provides relief for the pain. I told her what to do for comfort until I got home. When I got home, she was doing better. No fever, she did look pale though. She tolerated my palpating her belly but was a little tender. She assured me it was fine now and commented maybe she had ovulated and that was what she was feeling. She spent the day in bed and I did not push it as she was up all night and in pain. I checked on her throughout the day and found not much change.
Just as I drifted off to sleep at 12:30 am the pain was too much for her and that was when she came in to my room to wake me up. So I threw on some clothes, splashed water on my face and bundled her into the car for a trip to the ER.
The place was empty save for a woman with a crying toddler and a sweet little old lady with her doting husband who had driven home to get his wife’s meds….a gallon zip-lock bag full. Holly talked non-stop about the sights and sounds and what they would do to her here. She wasn’t too happy when I suggested there would probably be another pelvic.
My luck the doctor will be really OLD! I swear I am getting more action this week than i ever have, mom.
I thanked her for that little bit of info.
In her little exam cubicle we met her doctor. He was old enough to be married because he had a band on his left ring finger so he must have been old enough to drive himself to work. he was gentle and soft spoken as he did a quick physical exam of Holly. He then told her the nurse would be in to set her up for a pelvic….oh goody! ….followed by blood draws and Holly needed to provide a urine sample. She was a trooper despite the tears rolling down her face. I was proud but worried as I read the concern on baby doc’s face. A little while later he came in and told her the urine sample was contaminated and they would need to get a cath sample. he then carefully explained how that was done. I again was proud as Holly advocated for herself with that point refusing the straight cath until the blood work came back. He didn’t push it and Holly was right on the mark….good girl!
Before the blood work came back she was sent to radiology for a CT scan. The tech was very accommodating with me as Holly told her I was a nurse. I couldn’t see much in the scan except that she has all her internal organs all in the right place. Holly joked asking if they were pretty.
Twenty more minutes and we had our answer. It’s a kidney stone. So at 4 am we were sent home with some good pain killers and some anti nausea suppositories.
I am supposed to put those WHERE?! WHY?!
We get home 20 minutes later just in time to say goodbye to Bill as heads off to work. He didn’t even have a clue as to my nocturnal adventures. He is so sexy when he is clueless!
After 4 hours of sweet slumber, the day began again and now it is time to take Holly to see her doctor, pick up her prescriptions and strainer. I teased her that e should stop at the scrapbook store and pick up a memento envelope so we can put the stone, when she passes it, into her scrapbook….
