Why would swollen skin split minutes after death

Living in Philippines. A close male realtive in mid 50's had sudden swelling of the legs with no signs of insect or snake bite and died 7 days later. Shortly after death the skin on his left leg calf split horizontally for almost 4 inches. The back of his shoulders had dark blue scratches appear shortly after death. The family will not do an autopsy.
I am assuming this was some from of allergic reaction that revealed itself shortly after he returned from a tropical hunting session. I am also assuming that the allergic reaction and it's subsequent side effects was the reason for the fatality.
