i need hope...

Posted by kelly m.

i gave birth to a beautiful baby boy 2 weeks ago, but am now suffering through what i believe is a severe case of postpartum depression. At times i feel as though i am unable to function at all...my world feels so hopeless right now

I began taking prozac 8 days ago but i haven't noticed much of any difference.  I know that antidepressant take time, but i just dont know how much more of this i can take

Please....if anyone has any positive words or advice....i think it would help to to hear from someone who has been through it before

Kelly,

You'll see I posted an answer to your question elsewhere but I also wanted to respond to it here.  Postpartum depression is treatable and temporary.  With help you will get well.  And you are not alone as more than 800,000 women in the US have the same experience you are having each year after having a baby.

It sounds like you have already reached out for professional help so you are clearly taking the right steps in trying to move toward a full recovery.

In terms of treatment, keep communicating with your doctor about the medication you are on.  Some medications don't work for some people.  You might also consider other forms of treatment, such as talk therapy.  And be sure to get as much sleep as possible, and good nutrition.

I'm not sure where you live, but there are lots of support groups around the country filled with women who are going through the same thing you are and women who have recovered. You can find them here: http://postpartum.net/local-support/ or here: http://postpartumprogress.typepad.com/weblog/postpartum-depression-support-groups.html

And if you're looking for a little inspiration, check out this photo album of recovered moms who at one point felt exactly the way you do now: http://postpartumprogress.typepad.com/photos/happy_healthy_mom/index.html
