There are very few illnesses in mothers that mean you should stop breastfeeding. Most common illnesses, like colds and flu, can't be passed through breast milk. In fact, if you are sick your breast milk will contain antibodies (disease -fighting substances), which help to protect your baby from getting the same illness.

If you have vomiting and diarrhea you should carry on breastfeeding, but make sure you drink plenty of liquids to keep up your fluid levels and prevent dehydration. See your doctor if your symptoms don't get better after a few days.

when i was breastfeeding my son, i picked up a stomache bug while at work, nausea, diahrrea, vomiting, and just all around felt like crappiness. i called my doctor to ask if it was ok to continue breastfeeding, he informed that whatever i had i probably already had before i started to show any sypmtoms so i should go on breastfeeding and just keep an eye on my baby, who was 3 months old at the time. well needless to say he got very very sick, and wound up in the hospital with iv's running all through his little tiny body. it was horrible and in hindsight i wished i had just given him some formula until i felt better. it was terrible seeing him like that and the whole time i felt it was all my fault.
