Is this much bleeding normal during fifth week of pregnancy?

I am 24 years old, good health, first pregnancy (I hope!) and clueless! I should be on week #5 (3rd week after conception). On Sunday I started having very light spotting--pink/watery spots and then brown spots. Today, though, it seemed to get heavier (still watery brown), and then this afternoon there was some red blood that covered a panty liner. It was more than I would call spotting, but I don't know how heavy it can be to still be considered spotting. About half an hour later when I went to the bathroom there was a long string of mostly blood that looked like bright red discharge coming out of me. It's been an hour since then, and nothing more has come out. What is going on? Is it normal to bleed that much, or am I not pregnant after all? My doctor doesn't want to hear about anything until 8 weeks, so I don't know who to ask, and I just need to know so I can stop worrying.
