PPROM at 15 wks, Many Symptoms - No cause. Can you help find Why?

Posted by JB

The picture of a super healthy & fit at 32, I finally chose donor sperm when my husband was found infertile. We suffered many miscarriages from chromosomal abnormalities. We were best friends but knew donor sperm was our only answer. We'd tried IVF four times, two of them were frozen embryo transfer & each resulted in a pregnancy that miscarried by 5 weeks. We even got pregnant on our own once, that too miscarried early. I had fertility work ups that found me 100% healthy. I had spent the past year doing IVF meds and suffering losses but had recovered to do IUI with donor sperm. We had a healthy pregnancy, it was a boy and we both quickly forgot it was donor. All that emotional donor stuff just disappeared to happiness when we saw our little boy and we were in love. At 8wks I began spotting but my OB said it was an irritated cervix, me not the baby and was fine. By 10wks my cervical mucus was *abundant* and more bloody. My OB said it was no coming from where the baby was at, behind my cervix. But, the baby looked fine and to start bed rest, all will be ok. Blood and urine tests came back healthy. At 13wks I was the same and the mucus thicker and still bleeding. I went to my OB because my lower abdomen was lightly sore. I'd followed bed rest, 100% pelvic rest and each time I stood the blood tinged mucus became heavy. Again, my OB saw baby was ok and things looked the same. I felt otherwise but tried to have hope and continued bed rest. 4 days after my OB visit I stood to the bathroom & my water broke completely. In ER they said I had to deliver the baby, he won't survive. Two days later, no labor and they did a D&E. The day before the D&E they started labor with sticks opening my cervix over night. The OB found a blot clot inside my cervix. The next day D&E surgery found baby, cord, placenta 100% healthy. But, the amniotic membrane was very severely infected. I hear that's likely after water breaks & time passes. I felt like it was not the cause of the water breaking, that it maybe happened after the water broke. I asked the OB if they could be sure the infection was there before the water broke and they can not. But, they say that because it was such severe that it "probably" was the cause of water breaking. I hear blood clots can rupture membranes and I did have a medium size one. They didn't see anymore after that. Could it have been the bleeding instead eroding the sac called Subchironic hematoma instead? We'll never know what took our little boy. The OB said the bacteria in the amniotic mambrane was not "definitive", unknown bacteria but sever infection. That seems odd to us, to have the bugs that did this and not know which one. I tested negative for everything and it's hard to know we might never find the cause. If we could know why, maybe it won't be so scary to try again. We are beyond terrified to try again without reassurance to prevent it happening once more or even know what we face. They offered a short bit of antibiotics before we try IUI using donor again. But, said there's no proof it will prevent anything. I'm so clean, I know there's always bacteria present no matter how clean... but, this has so many symptoms and with no findings and seems unlikely to never have answers. We'd appreciate if anyone can share any advice, opinions or suggestions or if you have info... anything will help rest our heavy hearts. Thank you so much for your time here! JB
