Like so many holidays, the origins of Valentine's Day is not entirely clear. The most prevalent theory credits St. Valentine with conducting clandestine wedding ceremonies in opposition to the Roman government. The infraction was eventually found out, and Claudius the Cruel sentenced St. Valentine to death. During his incarceration, Valentine apparently fell in love with the jailer's daughter. Though her love was taken away from her, she was the recipient of his last letter and the first "valentine." Although the legends are cute enough, I never get particularly excited about celebrating Valentine's Day. I always feel a little strange about buying gifts because someone says, "Ready. Set. Buy." Commercialism notwithstanding, the day is really about the celebration of love. And I have lots of love to celebrate. Although Tony and I are going to skip the big shebang this year, there will be a quiet dinner of which lamb is the star. And an evening alone sans media full of closeness and snuggles. And we will celebrate how much we love each other, and how far we have come together. Happy Valentine's Day. -- Mya |
