trying to conceive

Feb 4th had the depo-provera shot 1 time. Did not take another shot. Went to the doctor because I am trying to get pregnant.
The dr said to count the first day of period as day one and on day 12-14-16 would be the days to try to conceive on. The only problem with this is that I have irregular periods. September 18th I started my period and it lasted 17 days October 3rd. My period started again October 22 and lasted for 3 days. So how can you ovulate or try when you are still beeding on the days you are supposed to ovulate?
