How To Dice Avocado - Video

Posted Nov 06 2009 10:01pm
The video below shows an easy little trick I learned in culinary school for dicing avocado. It's my preferred method instead of trying to cut chunks in the avocado before scooping it out. I love adding diced avocado to raw soups, salads, and raw pasta dishes. Yum! In this video, you'll see me dicing an avocado to put in a truly simple, mega delicious, raw pasta dish which consisted of organic noodles made of cucumber and zucchini, along with diced red bell pepper, fresh corn cut right from the cob, a squeeze of zesty lemon juice, and a sprinkle ofHimalayan crystal salt.

Avocados are a BIG part of my life. Unfortunately, I hear about too many people being scared of them because of their fat content. Know this: when you pass on avocado, you pass on major nutrition. An avocado is filled with a whopping 9 grams of dietary fiber (sometimes more!), plus plenty of B-vitamins, including folate – making this an excellent choice of fruit for us pregnant ladies. :) Avocado also has protein, vitamins K, C, and E, lutein, iron, and beta-carotene. Whoo hoo!

Furthermore, although I always buy organic, this is one of the fruits that is sprayed the least when it comes to the conventional produce; therefore, if I couldn't get my hands on organic, I'd be pretty comfortable going with conventional from time to time. Get the Shopper's Guide To Pesticides here. (They have an iPhone application, too!)

So, that being my perspective about avocado... I'd like to refer you to one of my favorite blogs,Choosing Raw. Here is a post where expert Raw food coach, Gena Hamshaw, writes about Raw fats, more specifically,The Truth About Raw Fats.By the way... when I can't take on additional consulting clients, Gena is the person I refer people to. She is nothing short of amazing! If you're looking for a Raw food coach, she's your gal!

Storing Avocado
Keep avocados on the counter until they reach ripeness (when their skin is usually brown in color and if you gently squeeze it, it “gives” just a little). At this point, you can put them in the refrigerator where they’ll last up to a week longer. If you keep ripe avocados on the counter, they’ll only last another couple of days. Avocados, like bananas, give off a gas as they ripen, which will affect the ripening process of your other produce. Let them ripen away from your other produce. And, if you have a lot of avocados, separate them. This will help prevent all of your avocados from ripening at once.
