What causes pain during sex?

You don't say how old you are, so this is a tough question to answer. If you are 40+ however, one of the causes of pain during sex can be that your vaginal tissues are dry and/or are thinning simply because your hormone level is decreasing. If you are under 40, it's possible that you have endometriosis. This condition can leave scar tissue and sometimes this can cause some pain.

 Why don't you go to a gynecologist and get a professional opinion. There are many possible reasons, some of which can be very very serious...like ovarian cysts, tumors, etc.
