Anyone with Platelet Rich Plasma treatment experience?

Posted by dlease

I tore a hamstring tendon back in April and tried the normal rehab routes.  We didn't know it was torn at the time and I was preparing for a 100 mile trail race in June, so I used PT and foam rolling and stretching, etc.

My stride was compromised, but the race is so hard to get into, that I gave it a shot.  I was fine going uphill but I was pathetically slow downhill.  I missed a time cut-off and was pulled from the race at mile 24.

Since then, I've had an X-ray and an MRI.  I have what has been described as a high grade tear of the biceps femoris and semimembranosus conjoined tendon.  The tendon is partially torn from the ischial tuberosity and there is a retraction of the torn tendon by about an inch.

So, 4.5 months after the injury, my running is still highly compromised and I'm having a PRP injection on Wednesday.  This is an out of pocket procedure because my insurance considers it experimental.

I can live with that, but I was curious if anyone else has had a similar treatment and how it turned out?

My biggest fear is trying this not just once, but maybe two or three times, and then finding out that it isn't working, and I'd be out of a lot of money, out a lot of time, and then either looking at a permanent change in my ability to run or I'd be looking at surgery.  The surgery itself would cost me my upcocming ski season and I'm an instructor who typically skis 50+ days per year.

Any experiences to share?  I'd really love to still run a 50 mile qualifier this fall so I can re-enter the lottery for the race I DNF'd this summer, but that seems very unlikely.  I've stayed in really good shape through some running, biking and lots of lifting, but I'm far from a normal stride when running.

Thanks for any thoughts or stories.
