Minneapolis Aquatennial Torchlight 5K PR (24:08)

Posted Jul 23 2009 10:44pm
I ran the Minneapolis Aquatennial Torchlight 5K Wed night. this was the first time I ever ran this race. You run through downtown Minneapolis. They have a parade right after so there are lots of people along the way to cheer you on. Since there was so many people I wanted to try and get near the front so I wouldn't be got up in the mass like the Twin City 1 Mile race. I had to wait about an 45 minutes after getting my bib number. I stretched and had a G2. Right before the race and in the pack of people I had to pee. :-) Well nothing I could do about it now. They started the race and we were off. I had a little trouble weaving through people. One couple was trying to take their picture together as they ran. This is mostly a social run, so I just veered around them. I was able to find some open space pretty quick. I know I pushed my pace faster than usual, but I wanted to see what I could do in a 5K. My mouth went dry right away and this was a distraction. I hit the first Mile and couldn't believe my watch. It read 6:54. That is the fast mile I have ever ran in a race. It was actually faster have 5 seconds than my Twin City 1 Mile race. I pushed on, but at this point I really had to pee and it was starting to be a bother. I had no idea if my pace was going to drop like a rock or not, but I just pushed on as best I could. I hit the 2 mile mark at 7:04. Wow still happy, but really had to pee. My mouth was super dry and right before the 2 mile they had a water station. I grabbed some water but I couldn't drink it only swish it around in my mouth. I was really hurting after the 2 mile and new I had a chance for a PR if I didn't die to bad. I could feel myself slowing down and was getting passed quite a lot. I crossed the stone arch bridge which I ran on before during training runs so I new I was close. I just didn't know how far down they bout the finish. I saw the flag so I put on my kick unfortunately it was the 3 mile flag. I still had .1 mile to go. At that point I was dead, but I struggled on. Right before the finish line someone screamed push it. So I gave it my all and ended up passing 3 people right at the finish. That help me feel a little better after pushing to the wrong finish. I checked my watch and it was 24:08. A new PR I beat my old PR I set over 5 years ago by 40 secs. I just missed going under 24 minutes my goal for the year by 4 secs. That was a big stretch goal for me but now I think it is possible. I also thing the bike training has really helped my running by using similar muscles, but taking the pounding off my knees

Mile 1 6:54 (Fastest Mile in a race)
Mile 2 7:04 (Second fastest Mile in a race)
Mile 3.1 10.12 (Lesson run to the right finish)

Final Time: 24:08 (New PR)
