How to avoid jet lag (1)

Posted Mar 21 2009 2:03am
Every time I travel to west coast to see my mom, I get jet lagged. I lose my appetite, get headache, and mostly suffer from insomnia. This situation is much better now after I tried to overcome get lag. I follow a specific routine and take some kind of hormone pills. In this post I'd like to share my tips with you to reduce your get lag problem.
I've divided the tips into two categories: During the flight, and after arrival.
Followings are ones that should be followed during the flight to avoid jet lag:

1) Drink water and avoid alcohol
During the flight, drink a plenty of non-alcoholic fluids, to compensate dehydration caused by dry air of the plane. Alcohol can't counter dehydration, and its intoxicating effect is doubled in pressurized cabins. Tea and coffee are not as good as water. Coffee has a bad effect on sleep schedule and mess it.

2)Do some exercise
Do as much exercise as you can in the plane.Get up and stretch. Walk up and down the aisle. If there is stopover between legs of flight, try to get off the plane and do some more exercise and walk the terminal.

3) Try to be comfortable
During the flight, wear comfortable cloths and shoes. When you want to take a nap, take off your shoes, wear soft sock-like slippers, and use sleeping aids like eye mask and ear plugs. You can get comfortable eye masks and ear plugs from Amazon.com in the window below this post.

4) Take Melatonin
Melatonin is a hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles. Under supervision of your doctor, you can take melatonin pills to avoid jet lag. There are different tablets and capsules for Melatonin. The one that I use is 5-HTP 5mg capsules. You can get it from Amazon.com through this link:
Source Naturals 5-HTP, 100 mg, Capsules, 120 capsules

5) Don’t take sleeping pills
Taking sleeping pills might be dangerous, because it causes more immobility during the flight that may lead to fatal blood clots. Besides, it dehydrates your body significantly.

In the next post I will explain the tips that should be followed when you arrive the destination.
