I'm 26..no kids...yet! ;)  I eat about 5-6 times a day. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and 2 snacks in between. NEVER skip breakfast! Its your most important meal of the day!  For breakfast I always have oatmeal and scrambled egg whites, with fresh fruit and water.

Never allow yourself to get to the point where you're "starving"...I would say to eat every 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

 I am trying to build lean muscle mass and shed fat...so I make sure I take in PLENTY of lean protein like chicken, fish, turkey, etc.  Also, complex carbs should be a part of every meal as well....and I always make sure I'm eating "clean"..meaning, eating food in its natural state..NO additives, nothing processed if I can help it.  I have cut out pretty much all sweets.  No soda. No sugar.  Stay away from starchy whites like white bread, white rice, and pasta....stick with WHOLE GRAIN breads, pastas and brown rice. Make sure you're drinking plenty of water.  Depending on your goals, you'll probably need more than 30g of protein. My intake is around 80g per day I believe. I drink a whey protein shake after my workout each day and that alone is 28g...the rest I get from food.

Remember that dieting differs from person to person depending on your own body and your goals.  GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!
