How long does it take a severe sprain to heal properly?

Posted by jaybird

I sprained my ankle 9 weeks ago. Dr called it a severe sprain. I was in a splint and on crutches for 1 week. Dr told me to walk on it with the splint still on which I did for 4 more weeks. Ankle is still swelled and very sore to the touch and in constant continuous pain. So then Dr put me back on the crutches and has sent me for an orthopedic consultation. I have bouts where my toes swell and become very tight and are hard to move and wiggle, I have bouts where my foot will literally go numb and feels like it has fallen asleep for an entire day at a time. I am still in the splint and on crutches until I see ortho. I can move my foot up and down but there is no way that I can move it side to side. I feel pain that I can only describe as "I feel pain in the bone" as in the ankle bone on the outside and I have pain that goes down my foot into my toes, around the back of my foot to the other side, and up the outside of my leg. There are times that the muscles in my foot will jump also and you can see my toes moving involuntarily and when that happens it feels like my foot is literally on fire and I have to look to make sure that it is not and it really hurts. Is all of this part of the normal healing process or is there something more severe going on here that I need to worry about? I am going to be seeing ortho in just a few days but my GOD after 9 weeks of constant continuous pain this is really getting annyoing and I am starting to really worry. Can anyone help with this? Please?
