Surfing the Great Lakes! Brrr!

Posted by Kristen D.

This is unbelievable! Surfing in Wisconsin (I didn't even know that was possible!) on New Year's Day, with a wind chill of 2 degrees.

Where I live, there's a fundraiser where people jump into the freezing bay waters in the winter as a "thank you" (and entertainment, I guess you could say!) for the people who supported the cause. It's referred to in some places as a "Penguin Plunge." The pictures at the link above reminded me of something like that, only much much much much more daring and intense, obviously.

Have any of you ever surfed the Great Lakes, or somewhere else in similar conditions? What was it like?

I have not surfed the Great Lakes but I have surfed in Washington state, and the water is very cold there all year round. As long as you have the proper gear, you can surf in very cold water and feel just fine. When I surfed in Washington, I would wear a thick wetsuit, gloves and booties (and maybe a hat) and it really isn't as bad as you might think.
I live in Washington State and am interested in learning to Surf. Any recomendations on where to go?
