Sunny Colorado

Posted Sep 11 2009 2:04pm
Yup, I brought the San Diego weather to Colorado. When I was flying in, snow was everywhere. EVERYWHERE. The next day? 80-degree weather. Nice.

My stay in Colorado started just as a good couple of weeks of exercise should start. Or not. Saturday, practically right after I landed, we went dancing. And on Sunday, I stuffed myself with six different types of chilli at a chilli cookoff.

But it wasn't all dancin' and pigging out. I did run on Sunday. And I was slooooow. My breathing was heavy. My muscles burned. And after only 45 minutes on my feet, I felt like I've ran 10 miles and as if my lungs had exapanded to twice their usual size. Hello, elevation!

Monday was a rest day. I just worked, then took a four hour nap after my work day completed, woke up to have an awesome dinner with my friend, and went to bed again shortly after. Today I feel very well rested. The type of rested where you regain your faith in your body. Sleep is good.

Tonight is track. But I probably won't have anything amazing to report. I'm still adjusting to the elevation and my coach prescribed very modest time goals for the 800m repeats I'll be doing. We'll see how it goes. One thing I can't stop wondering about is how people can run a marathon at elevation after coming in from sea level only a couple of days before the marathon day. I simply don't know how you could run a marathon with so little time to acclimate. And it makes me cringe to think of the damage you could do to your body. Eeeeck. I'm very fortunately to be able to work wherever.

Hope everyone is having a great week!
