Wonderful Berries!

Berries are powerful disease fighters and they are full of vitamins and minerals. Compared to other fruit sources, berries offer the highest content of antioxidants and phytochemicals for fighting disease. What research has found up to now is that berries prevent diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and stomach ulcers. They are powerful and provide health benefits without the side effects of medicine.

I buy pure concentrated berry juice (oersap) and mix 50 ml with another fruit juice like apple, pear, or tropical juice. I especially like the pineapple/mango juice. This tastes heavenly! We drink a glass of this juice every day.

I rotate every week with using different berries. This week we are using elderberry (for colds and flu), and cranberry which tastes wonderful with apple/mango juice.

In the winter I store berries in the freezer. These are great to use when baking and added to desserts or pancakes. Blueberries are also delicious added to a spicy winter stew!

Unfortunately berries contain very high levels of pesticides, so it is important to use organic berries to obtain the health benefits! Berries are expensive, so drinking one glass of pure organic juice a day is a good alternative!
For those of you who have a garden- make use of it and plant berry plants and bushes! What healthier 'sweets' can you give your children? I have many different berry plants and bushes in the garden, such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, redberries and blackberries. I find them all very easy to grow.

So the next time you see a berry, realize that this little fruit is a treasure from nature. These berries keep you alive!
