Hello Stevia, Goodbye Sugar

Posted Oct 02 2009 10:00pm

Stevia plant Stevia continues to grow in popularity around the world. Sweeteners made from the stevia plant are expected to reach about $700 million in sales within the next five years, according to a new report by Rabobank.

This incredible “zero calorie” sugar substitute is gradually replacing sugar because it’s safe and healthier.

Stevia is originally from the rain forests of Brazil and Paraguay but it is now grown in those areas, as well as in Japan, Korea, Thailand, and China.

Studies have confirmed that the all-natural stevia has 300 times the sweetness of sugar and some reports have suggested that it might reduce high blood pressure, obesity and blood sugar levels, potentially helping with diabetes.

No wonder why companies such as Coca-Cola and Pepsi have started using stevia in some of their products. Stevia has being used in a variety of products, including fruit juices, teas, enhanced waters and carbonated soft drinks. The FDA approved steviol glycoside rebaudioside A (known as Reb-A), which is extracted from stevia, as a food additive in December 2008.

The list of benefits from stevia continues to grow. New reports suggest it can kill bacteria in the mouth and it’s good for your teeth. As a result, some chewing gum companies started to use stevia to replace sugar in their products.

So, if you can’t reduce sugar from your beverages or your diet, it’s time to try stevia. It’s healthy and safe and many people think it tastes better than sugar.
