"The Bariatric Advantage High Protein Meal Replacement comes in an
economic 24-serving tub with a measured scoop to make accurate
dispensing easy. Each 140-calorie serving provides a full 27 grams of
protein, with only 7 grams of carbohydrate (of which 5 grams are fiber,
and only 1 gram is sugar) and 4 grams of fat.
They are also
lactose-free to best meet the needs of weight loss surgery patients.
One hundred percent of the protein is from a high quality whey protein
isolate (There is no soy protein, only a small amount of soy lecithin
to mask aftertaste).
Fortified with between 15 and 50 percent of the DV
for 23 essential vitamins and minerals, this product makes a perfect
pre-operative weight loss shake or post-operative meal replacement for
bariatric surgery patients. Our meal replacement also comes in a great
variety of flavors (chocolate, vanilla, chocolate-mint, strawberry,
banana, and coffee) as well and an unflavored shake that can be mixed
with soup, yogurt, fruit or home-purchased flavorings."
I mixed the vanilla flavor with exactly eight ounces of cold filtered water in my Blender Bottle, and shook it like I meant it. The resulting shake had a great creamy, if somewhat thicker consistency. Had I added more water, it would have been quite liquid-y, but I enjoyed it like this. Usually powdered shakes are plain and liquid, this was a bit different.
The taste was straight up vanilla. I'm a vanilla girl, I like my vanilla protein. I had no complaints about the taste of this protein, and it would require no additional doctoring up, which I usually have to do to get plain vanilla powders DOWN. No additional sweetening, fruit or ice necessary, that is a big deal. (I tend to tell people to learn how to doctor up their powders to learn to live with the nasty flavors, but, this, this doesn't need it.) I am looking forward to trying the other flavors now.
Now since I am a fan of BIG SHAKES, I might consider adding lots of ice and blending it next time to make myself a longer-lasting meal, but I am a five year post op. I sipped it plain, and enjoyed it. I typically do not enjoy plain protein shakes, powders never.
As a bariatric baby, this 27 gram protein shake made in (Maybe one scoop in four ounces to start as a very newbie) 8 ounces of water is quite perfect and since it's lactose free, you're likely to not have any distress from milk sugars. Yes, lactose intolerance is a reality for some of us. It is The Suck. You could, if desired, mix this with skim dairy milk, lactose free-milk, or unsweetened soy milk if you REALLY wanted to, but I felt the BA powder on it's own with cold water was JUST FINE.
The Bariatric Advantage Meal Replacement is also available in a Sample Pack with 6 different flavors. This is awesome, because you know how it is to get a tub'o'protein and what if you don't love it? (Again, I remind you of my thirty pounds of protein in the cabinet. It's slowly going out of date. Some I like. Some are just all. wrong.)
Price - $35.95 - 24 serving tub/48 one scoop servings, I know many of my peers out there will do this, $9.95 for a Sample Box.
Pros - 27 grams of protein per two scoop serving, lactose free, 140 calories per serving, 1 gram sugar, full meal replacement, vitamins fiber.
Cons - I wanted more after it was gone, but. I'm a freak. (Quiet in the peanut gallery.)
Rating - Pouchworthy MM
*Update, I gave Mr. MM the Chocolate flavor this morning in place of the BSN Lean Dessert which he has been drinking for a week or two, and his review is as follows, "it's good, it's sweeter than the 'other one,' I could drink this."
