Michael Phelps 12,000 calorie diet, can you eat it and not get fat?

Posted Sep 07 2008 8:36pm

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and here is Olympic Champion Michael Phelps has:

  • three fried egg sandwiches with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions, and mayo

  • one five-egg omelets

  • a bowl of grits

  • three slices of French toast with powdered sugar

  • three chocolate chip pancakes

  • two cups of coffee

For lunch:

  • Phelps drinks 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks

  • one pound of pasta with tomato sauce

  • two large ham and cheese sandwiches (with mayo) on white bread

And finally for dinner:

  • Phelps’ meal consists of six to eight slices of pizza, another pound of pasta with tomato sauce, and 1,000 calories of energy drinks

Can you eat 12,000 calories a day and not get fat? God no, you will blow up like Britney Spears the day her handlers left her! But it is important to note that cutting calories and getting cut do not always go hand in hand. You see, most people are sedentary and need to either become active or eat like a sedentary person should. Simply put, if you are not active you do not need to consume many calories (2-3ooo is fine for most people) and you really need to watch the carbs and processed foods.
If you are active on the other hand, the rules change in your favour of eating like an Olympian! The more active you are, the more you can eat while losing even more weight. I am not simply tracking about burning 300 calories on the treadmill so you get to eat an extra 300 calories. What I am saying is that at a certain point, the more you eat the more weight you lose!
Dr. John Berardi calls this the G-flux effect. If you train hard for more than 5 hours per week, your metabolism can become so fast that it is effectively impossible to become fat! Even better, at that point, the more calories you consume, the better you will look! What you are doing, and what Phelps has done, is create a metabolic turnover that is extremely inefficient! Your body will not store fat because it always wants to burn it off as energy!
I can attest to this effect as I used to be Muay Thai kickboxer and would lift weights each day. I would lift weights for an hour each lunch time using nothing but big moves such as the squat, deadlift, or clean and press. Then after work I would head back to the gym and train for 1.5-2 hours doing nothing but calisthenics and fighter training. It was tough but once it became routine I didn't even mind it. At work all I would do is sit and eat, while working on the computer of course. I would get annoyed at how often and how much I had to consume just to keep my belly from hurting! But you know what? I had a nice six pack and was hard as a rock.
Can you train hard for at least five hours per week? Sure you can, you just have to work up to it physically and plan for it in your life. First off, think off all the time you waste watching TV after work or dinner. Secondly, think of that massive 1 hour lunch break you use to sit on your behind every week day. What about your commute to work, do you sit or do you bike? There are tons of ways to sneak in exercise and become a calorie burning machine like Phelps so why not do it?
Here is a good example of a plan most people could tolerate:
  • Bike to and from work every day (5 hours per week light exercise)
  • At lunch, go for a nice walk outside (5 hours per week light exercise)
  • After work, hit the gym for one of strength training or participate in a sport (5 hours per week hard exercise)

So here you have 5 hours of intense exercise and a potential of 10 hours light exercise! That is more than enough to have the metabolism of an Olympic swimmer and really doesn't take much dedication at all or take any time on the weekend!
