Are you planning on losing 40 pounds in 12 weeks? That seems like a very unrealistic goal and the only way you could do this is to starve yourself and exercise all day, every day. Plan on losing one to two pounds every week  and eating around 1400-1600 calories a day. Also plan  on exercising for at least 30 minutes every day. That way you might be able to lose 20 pounds. Maybe.

40 lbs in 12 weeks is a little over 3lbs per week.

It can probably be done, but weight loss this drastic usually results in a depressed metabolism and a rebound weight gain.

The Doc is right when she recommends a more gradual weight loss plan. If you average 2 lbs per week, you are still looking at 24 lbs lost.

To achieve this weight loss, I would recommend following a paleo style weight loss program focusing on fruit/veg and healthy fats and protein.

Just focusing on calories is a short sighted approach to weight loss.

We need to look at quality of food, not just quantity
