Product Review: Weight Watchers Golden Sponge Cake

Posted Oct 14 2008 12:23pm

Product Review: Weight Watchers Golden Sponge Cake It’s been a long time since I had a Twinkie and to be honest I wasn’t THAT big of a fan. I mean, don’t get me wrong, as a kid if someone offered me one I wasn’t going to turn it down but I was more of a Devil Dog, Ring Ding girl myself. So when Weight Watchers asked if I would try their new Golden Sponge Cake I said SURE! But I was really hoping for something chocolate on the inside. :~)

The cakes really do remind me of miniature Twinkies. The cake part is airy and the filling is super sweat. The only difference is they are about 1/2 the size. I’m not kidding they are almost exactly half. Let’s do a little side by side comparison…

I’ll let that speak for itself. Ok, now, I can nicely agree with all the other bloggers who have reviewed this product and say things like "it’s a great option and a nice treat for those following Weight Watchers" but…. I gotta be honest.

Yes they taste good! The first ingredient is sugar.

Will you be satisfied after 1? maybe.

If you eat more then one the aren’t you better off eating the actual Twinkie? Especially if that’s what you want in the first place?

Maybe I’m out of line here but I don’t understand why Weight Watchers, the brain child behind the CORE plan, the geniuses (saying this non sarcastically) who came up with the points system, the program I know and love would sell these types of products. Seriously, I can’t even type out the ingredient list it’s so chock full of crap I can’t pronounce. I’m tired of people selling us "diet" foods that are just smaller versions of the food we actually want to eat with a bit more fiber added in to make us think it’s healthier. Come on people, we aren’t morons!

WOW — let me step down off this soapbox….

Ok, now that I got that out of my system I’ll say this. They do taste like twinkies and we will finish the package. I am a believer in everything in moderation but I won’t be buying these for a few reasons…

  1. I’d rather experiment and make my own cakes at home
  2. There are other convenience products that have a better nutritional resume and
  3. If I really want a twinkie I’ll buy a darn twinkie and pray I have the resolve to cut it in half. If not I’ll enjoy my 3 points snack as I just ate 2 of the Weight Watchers cakes for 3 anyway.
