Tech Helpers for Weight Loss Success

Posted Jan 01 2009 2:12pm

So your New Year’s resolution is to lose weight this year? Good for you! In this technological age, there are many devices to help you reach your goals.

Many weight-loss programs can be accessed through the Web like the ones at Weight Watchers, which allows you to carry your plan with you on your Blackberry or other mobile device. No matter where you are, you can check points at the grocery or restaurant, or calculate all those calories burned at the gym or out walking. They have programs designed for men and women, and have recently launched a new Momentum program.

A sensei is "revered teacher" to the Japanese, and at Sensei.com, the service claims to be "like having your own weight loss coach," providing information and support on diet and nutrition as well as a custom plan based on your own food preferences (even fast food!) and even a coach accessible by mobile phone or computer. The site currently has an introductory price of $11.25 per month and a seven-day free trial.

You don't only have the ability to keep track of what you put into your body--now you can also keep a real-time record of what calories you're burning, with the Bodybugg. Four different sensor devices in this tool worn on the arm measure skin and body temperature, motion and galvanic skin response, giving the wearer a picture of how gravity is working against the movement of the body, how increased motion raises the body's temperature, which burns more calories, and how conductivity on the skin may be affected by things like stress or sweat. So the question still is have you burned more calories than you've eaten, but the instant gratification of seeing those calories disappear would seem to be very encouraging. Bodybugg's basic program costs $249 and comes with the armband, a customized meal program for six months, and a call from a personal coach.

For those who need extreme measures, there are devices such as this one premiered in the United Kingdom last year, where constant electronic reminders teach young and old alike to slow down and learn to listen to their body's signal it's full.

You can also check services and electronic devices you currently have for applications geared to help weight loss. iGoogle has the Google 15, that helps track your progress to keep you focused, and the iPhone has programs like My Weight Loss Coach and True Weight that can give you ongoing information and support.

One of the best motivators for weight loss has always been community, and a sense of support from those around the dieter. If you don't have someone close to support you, or if those at home are actually sabotaging you, check out the online community for inspiration.

There are literally hundreds of websites, blogs and other social networking places to "meet" and gain encouragement. Wellsphere's weight loss center is just one of their health-related communities, where people can come ask questions, set goals, gain 'atta-boys' from peers and professionals alike.

You can create your own blog on a number of different hosts, track your own progress and meet others who are doing the same. Finding a wide base of support is great--as long as it doesn't increase your own wide base by putting in too many hours in front of your computer instead of burning those calories!

The bottom line for any successful weight loss is to consume less calories than you burn. While bariatric surgery is all the rage, there's no guarantee that will be any more successful than the basic bit of exercise called putting your fork down and pushing away from the table. But all the new gadgets certainly seem to give you some control and a little bit of fun in how you go about the next chapter of your life. Good luck!
