A couple of years ago - maybe two and a half to be more exact - I started working out with Russian Kettlebells and was pretty much hooked. Let’s face it, though. I’m human, and I do get bored! So once in a while, I start looking through my old workout videos and grab one to try out just for kicks.
Today was one of those days.
I’m sure you know about the ever-popular Pilates. Pilates was developed during the first world war to help rehabilitate returning veterans and focuses on both mind and body health. It is made up of exercises designed to strengthen the core and increase flexibility.
I am all for short workouts, and so many years ago, I did Pilates at least a few times a week and enjoyed it because it didn’t take too long and I could do it in my living room. Other than the short and convenient factor … well, I was kind of bored to tears! That said, though, I also cut out sugar from my diet at that time and dropped a quick fifteen pounds. I’m sure that Pilates had *something* to do with that!
So today, being a bit bored, I dug out the Winsor Pilates Maximum Burn Basics and Fat Burning DVD. If not for the abdominal work I had done yesterday, I could have done this first section of the DVD - the basics - in my sleep!
I don’t intend to rip on Pilates. As I said, Pilates has been quite effective for me in the past. My workouts, however, need to challenge me mentally as well as physically. Every time I get the urge to dig out an old workout video - be it Pilates, Jazzercise, Ballet, Tae-Bo, or aerobics - I immediately come back to my kettlebells.
I have to be honest. Today I didn’t even finish the tape. I was so bored that as I laid on the floor doing Pilates, I found myself flipping through one of my daughter’s books that hadn’t been put away. I think it’s time to check out some of the new Dragondoor Kettlebell products for Christmas. And you already know you can purchase gift certificates this year! It might also be time for a session with my live-in personal trainer!
Why do I keep coming back to my kettlebell? It challenges me physically to the point of exhaustion. It challenges me mentally because just when I think I *can’t* do something, I can, … and I finish. It builds muscle and makes me feel strong! It’s intimidating to look at, and I love that I can heave it above my head and do something so tiring! And when I get bored, I can always find something new to do with it.
