Swimming is one of the all-around best activities you can do for your body. It works all the major muscle groups, gets your heart pumping, and puts little pressure on your knees and joints. Swimming is great for people of all ages. Swimming is often used as a rehabilitation therapy, because the water supports your body, placing very little stress on your joints and bones.

Competitive swimming started in Europe around the 1800s, mostly using breaststroke. The crawl, or freestyle, stroke was introduced in 1873 and swimming entered the Olympic games in Athens in 1896. Today, there are four main types of stroke used in the Olympics, butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. The other types of stroke commonly used in recreational swimming are the side stroke, and of course, the beloved dog paddle. ›› Read more
