all about laser eye surgery

Posted Nov 21 2008 4:50pm
About 12 years ago, hubby underwent laser eye surgery. This laser eye surgery is popularly known as Lasik [ laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis] , a surgical alternative to wearing corrective eye glasses or contact lenses. It is performed to correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Hubby used to wear contact lenses [during daytime] and layered eyeglasses [during nighttime] for so many years because of his progressive myopia, his eye refraction reaching to 1020 [left eye] and 1010 [right eye]. Without them, he's almost blind. He also had an allergy for extended contact lenses so he had no other choice but to use hard lenses.

I think he was one of the first people who had this surgery when it was first introduced in the country. But before he had the surgery, we had to read about LASIK information first. The eyes are very delicate and we had to make sure that it is safe and effective. The procedure requires less time for recovery and according to his ophthalmologist it is painless. Upon knowing that he is qualified for Lasik and it's completely safe and there are no serious complications, we decided that hubby goes for it. By the way, not all people with myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism can be a candidate. Those with thin, irregularly shaped corneas or unrealistic expectations are not considered good candidates.

After a few tests, his doctor performed the surgery. Hubby said he felt no pain at all. The surgery only took about 40 minutes and he went home with a 20/20 vision. Lasik really changed his life for the better.
