irregular period

I'am 18 years of age, I started to have my period at age 11 and lately i been having irregular periods for bout 4 years. It is a heavy period that lasts up to about 4 months. Then after the 4 months are over, i wont have it again until about 2-4 months more. What should i do?! I dont find this normal. Should i see a doctor?
