Treatrment for vaginal dryness??

I am 32 year old and I have a 10 month old that is still breast feeding. I have had vaginal itching since giving birth. My doctor first treated me for vaginosis (without doing any tests) which did not relieve itching. I went back and they confirmed under the microscope that it was NOT yeast infection or STD or vaginosis and gave me prescription for Estrace cream saying my symptom is from dryness. I am hesitant to us the cream b/c breast feeding and other side effects. I am wondering if there is something else I should be looking into for diagnosis and treatment?
