what is the pain on the left side of my abdomen?

For the last 2 days I have been having sharp contracting pains in the left side of my abdomen.  The pains come every couple of minutes and last for a few seconds but the pain is very intense.  I do not notice it when I sleep, only when I am awake.  I have also had headaches for the last couple of weeks and I am not a person that usually has problems with headaches.
