The urge to create has been strong with me lately. Rather than question it, I've decided to follow it. That means taking the time to play with the goodies in my office like Play-Doh (there's nothing like getting your creative juices flowing with a Play Doh break -- and there's nothing like that awesome Play Doh smell!) and my hand drum. Years ago I found a great deal of pleasure beading. I made all sorts of necklaces and braclets that my family members still wear (that's the great thing about family -- they proudly display your creative endeavors whether or not they really like them).
As I've been diving deeper into my creative self, I find inspriation with hip tranquil chick
Kimberly Wilson. This creative, talented yogi (check out her
December 29th blog post which chronicles her visit home and her making of leopard print palazzo pants with her mom and grandmother -- how cool is that?!?!) is an author, yoga studio owner, clothes designer, blogger/podcaster, and non-profit organization creatrix. Her multi-talented ways and her expression of her creative talents have been quite an inspiration to me. After reading about Kimberly's creative pursuits with her family during her visit, I signed on for her
online creativity circle, which starts in a few weeks. Required reading for the circle is Julia Cameron's
The Artist's Way (and there's also The Artist's Way Workbook). I've had both the book and the workbook collecting dust on my bookshelf for far too long. It's time to dust them off and dive in.
If this is inspiring your creative side, here are a few fun projects for yogis:
- Make your own yoga pants -- check out this two part series on creating an awesome pair of yoga pants from a three-piece yoga pant pattern. Here's part I and here's part II. Happy sewing!
- Make your own yoga bag -- have a pair of old jeans lying around that you can't bear to part with but can no longer wear without getting drafts through the holes? Why not transform those jeans into a yoga bag? Click here to find out how you can do it.
- Make your own antibacterial yoga mat spray. This is a simple project that even a remedial crafter like me can tackle. Click here for the simple recipe.
- Make a chakra healing doll. If your chakras are in need of clearing, why not trying your hand at creating an adorable chakra clearing doll. Click here for step-by-step directions for this fun project.
If you'd rather enjoy the crafts of others,
check out these five wonderful yoga crafts on Etsy which inclued a baby bib, a mala, and a pocket mirror.
And if you're like me and you're not naturally creatively inclined but you do have a weak creative flame that needs to be fanned, here are a few great books to inspire you and get those creative juices flowing:
- Wreck This Journal -- this delightful journal begs to be scribbled in, bent, torn, and well-used. If you're like me and you tend to have a fear of breaking the spine on your precious journal, let loose with this fabulous artistic delight.
- Sark's New Creative Companion -- I am a Sark fan, so it's no wonder that I adore this book. If your creative flame needs rekindling, this is the book to do it.
- The War of Art -- this book is a perennial favorite of mine. As one who procrastinates, I find a great deal of inspiration in this book. It's an easy read and one that you'll turn to again and again as you deal with creative resistance. Excellent book.
Right now I'm supposed to be doing some homework for my yoga training course this weekend and I'm feeling completely uninspired. I'm thinking that a little Play Doh time will remedy that and inspire me. I might even break out some blank copy paper and my Crayola crayons. It's time to let my creative side shine through and see where it leads me.
Namaste!
