Yoga?

Posted by Remi C.

Is there a yoga program that one can join as part of Bewell? I am recovering from sone disc problem, and I was recommended to take some yoga (gentle yoga first) to work on my back stability and mobility at the same time. I an hoping to prevent the need for surgery.

Thanks

Remi

As you are recovering form a disc problem, best is to seek  a yoga teacher locally to learnthe basic yoga asanas that can help you. Do not try to  start on your own. However, you can start pranayama like deep breathing and alom vilom for 20 to 30 minutes for improving your blood circulation and  rejuvenating your body.

Hello Remi,

Since this site does not, for some reason, display the date of posts I do not know how tardy I am in responding. My apologies if you posted here months ago. I could not know the difference.

In order to advise a student about a therapeutic issue there must be a modicum of intake information provided. While I understand you have a "disc problem" I do not know its nature. Have you had an MRi? Is the disc protruding into the spinal canal?  Are you male or female, light or heavy, young or old?

Generally speaking, you'll need the approval of your health care provider (M.D., D.C. D.O. whatever) and a well trained senior teacher who has a therapeutics background. If you can find such a teacher in the Iyengar, Purna, or Viniyoga discipline you will be well served.

The need for surgery may be avoided (depending on an assortment of variables) but it must be done through asana/pranayama, diet/nutrition, and meditation. Otherwise the efficacy is greatly reduced.
